Marty The Dog Goes Viral After He’s Filmed High-Fiving Runners At The 2017 NYC Marathon
As runners took their places and spectators lined up to watch this year’s NYC Marathon, one special pooch had a plan to show his support. Marty (full name “Marty McFly”), a one-year-old rescue beagle-Lab mix, attended the first marathon with his pet parents, Jenny McCoy and Guilherme de Oliveira. But unlike most attendees who clapped and cheered to show their support, Marty stood on his hind legs and held his paw out to the runners, offering them each a high five as they passed him by. His dad, Guilherme, helped him stay steady on his feet, while his mom Jenny filmed the adorable ordeal and then shared it to his Instagram.
The video has since gone viral, and Marty is dealing with some newfound doggie fame. It’s an amazing turn of events for a dog who’d arrived as a shelter puppy at the Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue shortly before he was adopted in early 2017. Guilherme recalls the first time he and Jenny met their new best friend.
“About a month before we adopted Marty, Jenny started showing me photos of him on the Badass Brooklyn Instagram feed,” Guilherme told The Dodo. “She grew mildly obsessed with him, pointing him out to me a few times a day. She would say, ‘He’s the dog we want, the one we’ve been talking about all this time, he’s got that frisky and goofy personality we’ve been looking for!’”
The following week, the couple attended an adoption event to meet Marty in person. “We took him on a walk. I was still skeptical, but also aware that if we didn’t go home with a dog that afternoon, there would be hell to pay,” said Guilherme.
“He seemed sweet and docile, a little timid and afraid. I asked the handler if I could pick him up. I did, and that’s when I realized Marty was going to go home with us. Those floppy paws really did it.”
“Marty is the dog park hype man,” said Jenny. “When we arrive, dogs are typically playing with each other very calmly. As soon as he’s let loose, he gets the party going and the dogs are soon running full speed in circles like maniacs.”
Now Marty is making a name for himself in the online dog community, but the NYC Marathon is not exactly his first rodeo. This summer, he worked a kissing booth at a Badass Brooklyn event, where he licked peanut butter off the faces of strangers to raise money for the rescue.
He also made an appearance at the Tompkins Square Park Dog Parade for Halloween, where he was dressed as his namesake, Marty McFly from the ’80s blockbuster Back to the Future.
“We’ve been so happy to see how many more smiles and laughs he’s gotten online,” Jenny said. “This little goof cracks us up all the time, so we love that we can share the happiness he brings us with more people.”
Marty’s parents plan to bring him to next year’s marathon in hopes that he will continue to inspire more runners. “We’ve seen hundreds of comments from people claiming they will run next year if they can get a high five from Marty,” Jenny said. “He does not currently have any plans in 2018 (for the marathon), so we hope everyone is ready to run!”
