She Was Labelled “Ugly” Because Of Her Rare Birthmark, But She Turned It Into A Beauty Symbol
Maria Mendes, 24, was born with a birthmark covering a large part of her face. But the birthmark didn’t stop Mendes, who is from Brazil, from modeling for a photo shoot. Mendes used the opportunity to make an incredible statement about beauty.
Mendes’ birthmark covers part of her nose, her right eye, and her right cheek. It is a congenital melanocytic nevus, and affects approximately one in every 20,000 people. The birthmark, caused by increased pigment underneath the skin, makes the area appear darker.
Mendes had laser surgery treatments when she was five years old which reduced the birthmark. Her mother was afraid that Mendes would be bullied because of the mark, but Mendes has used the distinctive birthmark to her advantage.
“I feel more beautiful and totally different from other people because I have a nevus,” Mendes told Bored Panda. “There are many people who stare and who don’t like it, but I don’t care. I have been told by a few people that it’s “ugly” or “strange”, but it doesn’t bother me. That’s just their opinion and I think it’s beautiful. A lot of people ask me about my birthmark, sometimes they think it’s makeup or a tattoo but I don’t mind and explain it to them. I’m proud of having a nevus, it’s a part of who I am and how I learn to like myself.”
Mendes’ birthmark covers a significant portion of her face.
The condition affects only one in every 20,000 babies.
When Mendes was five, she had laser surgery to help reduce the mark.
The surgery wasn’t terribly effective, but Mendes has learned to use the birthmark to her advantage.
Mendes notes that the mark makes her feel more beautiful and different from others.
Some strangers have told her that the mark is ugly or strange, but she’s not bothered by it.
Mendes says that she sees the birthmark as just another part of her body.
Mendes is even proud of the birthmark.
“I will never be ashamed of my nevus and feel good having it.”
